Turn That Frown Upside Down

By Dern Heatherton

Botox is relatively uncomplicated, both in the delivery and the results achieved. This is one of the many reasons that Botox is the world's leading non-invasive cosmetic procedure. No other procedure comes close.

Not surprisingly, the treatment of the frown lines is one of the most popular treatment procedures for Botox patients. Botox makes your frown lines disappear. The reason is simple mechanics, based on the underlying muscles that cause the wrinkles to occur. The frown lines are reduced because the muscle that cause the wrinkles to occur is not activating in the same pattern.

Again, the most common area of treatment with Botox is the frown line between the eyes. In fact, when Botox Cosmetic was approved by the FDA in 2002, the approval indication was for frown lines. The popularity of treating the frown lines with Botox is the high rate of patient satisfaction with the results. Botox smooths out the vertical lines between the brows. This gives patients a more refreshed and relaxed appearance. Some patients say it eliminates their "angry" look.

Candidates for cosmetic surgery should be in generally good physical health and must be candid with their physician about any drugs they are taking. Your medical history should include oral contraceptives and estrogen replacement, vitamins, and herbal medications. Remember, these can impact blood clotting and could increase surgical risk.

Patients should be aware of all aspects of their planned treatment. In other words, they should know very clearly whether they should discontinue certain medications, or even stop smoking.

To achieve the most desired results, you should take the following precautionary measures when preparing for your Botox treatment:

- Wait 24 hours before engaging in strenuous activity or exercise

- Avoid laying down for 4-5 hours after the injections

- Do not massage the treated area or areas

- Be sure to practice daily facial exercises that your doctor recommends

- Sun block is an absolute must

It is best to restrict muscle movements right after your Botox procedure. This will give the agent a sufficient amount of time to settle.

Normally, a Botox treatment should last you between three and six months, depending on the treatment area and the severity of the problems. Facial lines and wrinkles will start to reappear after the time period has passed. Fortunately, the wrinkles will not be as pronounced. It is normally when this occurs that a patient will return to have their procedure performed again. Repeated Botox procedures will be lasting progressively longer with each treatment. As such, a patient will require fewer procedures to achieve their desired results.
